CERAMIDE Creation of a Recombinant Enzyme as an “Active BioMimetic Ingredient” for Dermocosmetics
Application
The CERAMIDE project successfully demonstrates the application of Plant Molecular Farming to the cosmeceutical sector, introducing a new production paradigm for high-value cosmetic ingredients in Italy. Using engineered plants, CeraKnight , a protein capable of stimulating ceramide synthesis and strengthening the skin barrier, was developed and produced. Safety tests and clinical studies on volunteers confirmed the absence of adverse effects and a significant improvement in skin hydration, with a reduction in transdermal water loss. The project achieved TRL6 , validating the technology and paving the way for the ingredient's future commercialization in the cosmeceutical market.
